What it takes to make a solid hardwood floor last in Quebec.
Signature solid hardwood is designed for nail-down or staple-down installation over a properly prepared wood subfloor. Solid hardwood is not recommended for installation over concrete slabs (engineered hardwood is the right choice in that case) or for use with radiant heating systems.
Before installation, every Signature floor needs to acclimate to the indoor environment of the home for a minimum of five to seven days. This is not optional. Solid hardwood that is installed without proper acclimation will move once it adjusts to room conditions, and that movement is the single most common cause of post-installation issues.
After installation, indoor relative humidity should be maintained between 35% and 55% year-round. In Quebec homes with forced-air heating, this typically requires a whole-home humidifier integrated into the HVAC system, or a high-quality portable unit during the winter heating months. An inexpensive hygrometer (under $20) lets you monitor humidity at a glance and is essential equipment for any home with a hardwood floor.
