Why Alta Moda hardwood is made for Quebec homes.

Alta Moda by Appalachian is the design-forward line, with fashionable colors and textures that anchor a contemporary interior. Built on Canadian Appalachian hardwood, it pairs current looks with the durability Quebec homes need.

As with any solid floor, keeping indoor humidity between 35% and 55% keeps it stable through our seasons.

“Solid hardwood is an investment that lasts decades in a Quebec home, as long as you manage the winter humidity,” says Sefi Dollinger, Owner of Planchers Bellefeuille, serving Quebec homeowners since 1983.
Installation and climate

What it takes for a hardwood floor to last in Quebec.

Solid Alta Moda flooring is nailed down over a well-prepared wood subfloor. Solid hardwood is not recommended over a concrete slab (choose engineered instead) or with radiant heat. Always leave an expansion gap around the perimeter.

Target indoor humidity: 35-55%. Below 30%, wood cracks and gaps during winter. Above 60%, there is a risk of cupping. We recommend a central or portable humidifier through the heating season.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions.

Is solid hardwood a good choice for Quebec winters?
Yes, as long as you keep indoor humidity between 35% and 55% year-round. Solid wood reacts to humidity swings, and Quebec winters drop indoor humidity. With a humidifier on a forced-air system, a Alta Moda floor performs beautifully for decades.
What is the difference between solid and engineered?
Solid hardwood is milled from one piece of wood and can be sanded many times. Engineered uses a real wood surface over a cross-layered core, which stays more stable over concrete and radiant heat.
Can it go over a concrete slab?
Solid hardwood is not recommended directly over concrete. For basements and slabs, choose an engineered floor instead.
How often can it be refinished?
A 3/4 in solid floor can typically be sanded and refinished several times over its life, which is part of what makes it last for generations.
